History, Demographics & Geography of Prince William County

Prince William County was founded in 1731. It was organized mainly from the western section of Stafford County, and also some sections of King George County. The area that originally encompassed Prince William County included what is now Loudoun County, Arlington County, Fairfax County, and Fauquier County; and independent cities of Falls Church, Alexandria, Fairfax, Manassas Park, and Manassas. The county was given its’ name by Prince William; the Duke of Cumberland, King George II’s 3rd son” and is located on the Potomac River in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The population of Prince William County is now nearing 450,000 people, making it the second-most populous county in Virginia.

Prince William County covers an area of about 348 square miles. To the north is Fairfax and Loudoun Counties; to the west is Fauquier County; to the south is Stafford County, and to the east is the Potomac River. Manassas has a population of nearly 40,000 residents and has experienced tremendous growth in the past decade. Manassas Park started its quest for independence in 1955. It was then that the first homes were built here as a subdivision in Prince William County.
